April 28, 2022
What is Transmission Fluid?
Transmission fluid is used to lubricate the parts of a car’s transmission and keeps it running smoothly. When and how to change your transmission fluid is a topic often up for debate, however. If you are driving with bad quality of transmission fluid or too little a quantity, you will most definitely over time be wearing down components within your car’s transmission.
When Should It Be Changed?
Advice differs for when you should change your transmission fluid, depending on whether you have an automatic transmission or a manual transmission.
A rough guide for automatic transmission is that you should change your fluid every 50,000-100,000 kms. Manual transmission fluid is recommended to be changed every 50,000-90,000 kms, however, some manufacturers would suggest getting it changed out at every 25,000 kms.
It is very important that you choose the correct type of fluid for your vehicle. Automatic cars take automatic transmission fluid. Manual cars might take any variety of oils including normal motor oil, hypoid gear oil or automatic fluid. Consult your owner’s manual to figure out what is best for your transmission.
Risks With Changing Transmission Fluid
You can change your transmission fluid yourself using the specific instructions for your car model type but you may need to consult a professional if you are planning to change the fluid in a high-mileage car. Old transmission fluid can often be contaminated with by-products of wear and tear. These can block pistons and O-rings. The transmission might begin to shift and slip when all this dirt is eventually flushed out.
Should I Call a Professional?
Changing your own transmission fluid is possible but can be complicated. If you are not sure of how to complete the task, you can contact an auto repair shop or dealer. They can check your transmission for quality, not just quantity, and advise you on whether you need to take action. They can either flush out or drain your fluid depending on your manufacturer’s instruction.
