If you walk out to your car and notice a bulge in your tire, the first thing that probably goes through your head is whether you can drive it anyway. Unfortunately, that would be a big safety hazard. Tire bulges are an indication that something has damaged the inner structure of the tire, which could mean a blowout on the road. It’s important to know what a tire bulge is, what can cause it, and what you should do about it.
Causes of Tire Bulges
A tire bulge happens when the inner layers of the tire are damaged, letting air escape to collect under the outer layers. A common cause is running over road hazards like potholes, debris, or curbs. Both over- and under-inflation can bulge the tire as well. The inner layers can be broken by the weight of the car if it’s too heavy or if the tires aren’t offering enough support. In rare cases, there could be a manufacturing defect. You might not be able to tell what caused the damage.
Driving on a Tire Bulge
Since the structural integrity of the tire has been damaged, you risk a blowout at any second. Hitting anything from a pothole to a slightly large rock could cause the tire to burst and send your car out of control. At best your car will be disabled alongside the road and at worst it could cause an accident. If you notice a bulge in your tire, you shouldn’t try to drive on it. It’s not a risk worth taking.
Replace Damaged Tires
If you see bulges or other signs of damage to your tires, get them taken care of as soon as possible. Tire bulges unfortunately can’t be repaired and will need replacing. Driving on compromised tires is too dangerous for even short distances as it only takes a small hit to cause a blowout. Get your car to a shop with a spare tire or a tow.
